AI-powered Matchmaking

Flurr is an AI powered matchmaking application targeting Queer Gen Z users with an approach rooted in thorough onboarding, and refined matching, not just to other users, but to local events they could meet at.

I worked as the Lead Product Designer on a small team: two founders, one engineer, and one user researcher. My focus was onboarding and the match experience, specifically, removing the friction between matching and actually meeting.

I designed two key touchpoints: a match card that uses AI to surface shared traits and conversation starters, and a curated event popup in chat that bridges users to local events.

3 Matches at a Time

Our matching experience was built to address a pattern we noticed in our user research: that users managed to find matches, but failed to follow up and actually meet them in person.

"Swiping never seems to be the problem. It seems to be the communication."
"I think I've had good success in real life… apps far from that experience."

The market reflected this too. According to OFCOM, from 2023 to 2024, Tinder lost nearly 600,000 users, Bumble shed 368,000, and Hinge saw 131,000 fewer visitors. Gen Z is pulling back from swipe culture and looking for real-life connection.

AI Event Pop-up Feature

During onboarding, users answer questions about their interests, ideal weekend, and location.

When two users match and start a conversation, the system compares both profiles to local events and surfaces one they'd both enjoy.
